RealVNC Acquires RPort Remote Management Software

The acquisition will enable the secure remote access provider to branch out beyond graphical screen sharing and into remote management.

CAMBRIDGE, England (Oct. 24, 2022) – RealVNC, the most secure remote access solution on the market, acquired RPort, a remote management software that immediately boosts the efficiency of IT teams and Managed Service Providers (MSPs). The acquisition will enable RealVNC to branch out beyond graphical screen sharing and into remote management.

RPort enables users to manage their entire infrastructure via a web browser, the command line, or programmatically through a REST API. This includes inventory management, dynamic device grouping, remote and scheduled script execution, device telemetry and flexible connectivity management. For example, a bulk update task targeted at 20 Windows devices could take up to 2 hours when executed individually in interactive screen sharing sessions. The same task could be achieved with RPort technology in less than 2 minutes.

The technology is highly complementary to RealVNC’s VNC Connect and will be integrated as an add-on for existing RealVNC subscribers in early 2023. It will also be provided as a standalone subscription under RealVNC’s brand. RealVNC will support flexible deployment options, similar to its current offering with VNC Connect, launching with both on-premise and fully-managed/hosted offerings.

With this acquisition, RealVNC will soon offer a comprehensive IoT device management platform to their customers. One of the largest challenges IT and field service professionals face is managing large fleets of devices deployed across the globe. When combined with RPort technology, RealVNC will help them master the unique challenges that arise in these environments — for example when a user managing thousands of devices needs to execute a remote script on all of them programmatically without logging into each device.

RealVNC Becomes First and Only Remote Access Solution to Complete White Box Audit to Validate Security

Cure53 security audit finds the VNC Connect Remote Access service to be strong and stable regarding security posture

CAMBRIDGE, England–(BUSINESS WIRE)–VNC Connect by RealVNC, the remote access service used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, was audited by Cure53, the Berlin, Germany-based IT security consultancy who have also audited other industry leading software such as Mozilla VPN, 1Password and Bitwarden. The comprehensive audit, which took 86 person days and included VNC Server and VNC Viewer on Linux, Windows and Mac, VNC Viewer for iOS and Android, the VNC Connect management portal and backend services, found 38 security-relevant discoveries, none of which were critical and only three were deemed high severity, and these were fixed immediately. The report states, in conclusion, that RealVNC places a strong focus on the security posture of all its components.

“As the technologists responsible for bringing remote access to the mass market, we are today setting new standards and expectations for security in the face of the challenges of the modern IT environment. IT buyers of remote access technologies should expect no less than independent and comprehensive third-party validation of vendor claims. This is especially true for remote access software where the stakes are high, and a mistake could be reputationally damaging or even existential. With Cure53’s report, buyers can be confident that choosing RealVNC as their remote access vendor will never be a regret,” said Adam Greenwood-Byrne, CEO of RealVNC.

A white box security audit is significantly more in-depth than the more common black box penetration test (which RealVNC also commissions by an external organization annually), as the auditors have access to all of the source code, binaries and API/protocol documentation. Of the 38 vulnerabilities found across the range of software and services tested, 32 have been properly addressed — with the fixes confirmed by Cure53 — while the other six were flagged as either false-alerts or works-as-intended and evaluated to be of lower risk.

RealVNC to test Cybersecurity Technologies of the Future from the University of Cambridge and Arm

RealVNC is 1 of 10 companies selected to participate in programme aimed at building a safer digital future

CAMBRIDGE, England (June 2, 2022) – RealVNC, a secure remote access software solution used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, has been chosen to experiment with potentially game-changing prototype cybersecurity technology through Digital Catapult’s “Digital Security by Design Technology Access Programme” in an effort to help build a safer digital future.

The technology was co-developed by University of Cambridge researchers (with colleagues at SRI International) in collaboration with Arm. The Cambridge-SRI research team has redesigned the architecture of a computer’s central processing unit – its brain – to make it less vulnerable to security breaches. This new architecture is called CHERI.

CHERI is being tested by RealVNC and nine other companies in the programme and has the potential to stop around two thirds of hacks, cyber attacks and data breaches, if implemented.

“We know how important security is to the future success of technology. That’s why we’re thrilled to help Digital Catapult ensure next-generation technologies are safe from security threats,” said RealVNC CEO Adam Greenwood-Byrne.

For six months RealVNC will have access to the CHERI-enabled Morello prototype board — a system on chip and demonstrator board that contains the prototype architecture CHERI — technical guides and support. RealVNC will test and evaluate these technologies within its own business and provide its findings back to the programme, which could influence the design of future and more secure computer systems.

The Technology Access Programme is part of Digital Security by Design: an initiative supported by the UK government to transform digital technology and create a more resilient, and secure foundation for a safer future. Digital Security by Design is supported by a consortium of world-leading technology industry partners, academics and research institutions, including Arm, University of Cambridge, Google, Thales, University of Edinburgh, Hewlett Packard, University of Oxford, Innovate UK, Microsoft, University of Manchester, Linaro, Kings College London and the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

RealVNC and the other participating companies will have access to the technologies as well as up to £15,000 in funding to support their experimentation period.
