08 Nov 2016, Cambridge UK: RealVNC have recently launched VNC Connect, adding support for cloud connections to VNC. We know that there are some circumstances where you don’t want your data to be sent via the cloud, which is why our Enterprise subscription gives you the choice of both new cloud connectivity and traditional direct connectivity for each of your connections.
For Home users, we expect the simplicity and convenience of cloud connections to appeal to most people, but Raspberry Pi users are not typical home users. The Raspberry Pi community has a strong tradition of embracing the more technical aspects of computing, so we knew that VNC Connect for Raspberry Pi couldn’t just be cloud only..
I’m pleased to be able to confirm that the upcoming version of VNC Connect for Raspberry Pi will allow direct connections out-of-the box, and will be free for non-commercial use in the same way as the version included with Raspbian today.
Should you decide to, you will be able to add cloud connectivity to your Raspberry Pi by setting up a VNC Connect Home subscription. Uniquely on the Raspberry Pi, this will continue to allow you to make direct connections as well as cloud connections, so you can get the best of both worlds.
Should you wish to gain a commercial benefit from VNC Connect on the Raspberry Pi, then our Professional and Enterprise subscriptions can be applied to the Raspberry Pi in the same way as other platforms.
It’s taking us a little bit longer to get this special version ready for the Raspberry Pi, but we hope to have something ready at the start of 2017.
