July 13, 2016, Cambridge, UK: RealVNC®, the original developer and provider of VNC® remote access and control software, has today announced that it will discontinue support for its deskhop app. Originally release in 2014, deskhop was a free Facebook app that allowed friends to securely share their screens in order to view and collaborate across a Cloud-based remote access platform. Effective August 1st, 2016, the Facebook deskhop app will cease to operate and no future support is currently planned.
“We regret that we’ve found it necessary to discontinue support for the deskhop app and would like to thank those global Facebook users that so actively embraced it.” explained Adam Greenwood Byrne, COO, RealVNC “Without significant development effort on our part, deskhop will stop working in early August when Facebook retires the API currently being used by our app. After carefully considering Facebook’s plans for ongoing API development, we concluded that we could not establish a practical long-term support strategy for deskhop. While the deskhop door is now closed, we will soon be opening another door with the release of an exciting new product. Designed for a very wide audience, including Facebook users, the new product uses our latest Cloud-based remote access technology to create a simple, yet secure, screen sharing solution. We are extremely excited about this upcoming release and are confident that our customers will be very pleased with the flexibility that it offers.”
The release of RealVNC’s new Cloud-based technology is scheduled for Q4 2016. To be kept informed about the product and the release timetable, visit www.realvnc.com/next-generation
