OEM integration remote access gathers momentum

New VNC SDK features released to support growing market

Over that last 15 years, RealVNC has built a strong reputation for our remote access software used in B2B applications. Use cases such as help desk, IT resources sharing and departmental training are extremely common, but the OEM integration of our software into 3rd party products using our VNC SDK has grown rapidly over recent years. This growth is driven by technology and commercial trends demanding a real-time view of remote devices, including the rise of high bandwidth networks and the IoT ecosystem.

Examples for the integration of remote access into different products are many and varied including: Set-top boxes, point of sale devices, ATMs, medical instrumentation and commercial vehicles. While the industries and supported “devices” are diverse, the fundamental business drivers are virtually identical. Real-time control of remote devices using screen sharing reduces the cost of call center and on-site service, increases the uptime of business critical devices, enables new revenue channels, and improves customer satisfaction. Some of our OEM customers have confidentially shared amazing ROI numbers. In one case saving hundreds of millions of Dollars a year.

With such compelling financial benefits on offer, it is no surprise that our VNC SDK represents a strategic contribution to our business and we have a dedicated team to support our OEM customers and continually enhance the product. This week we released the latest version of the VNC SDK (v1.5) that includes several important extensions driven directly by customer requirements. While there are a number of extensions in this release, the two headline features are a custom data channel and monitor display management.

Custom data channel

To securely share and control screen images from a remote device, we create an “encrypted pipe” to pass data back and forth in real-time. This new feature allows developers to use this secure pipe to pass other data types such as files, chat and device telematics. Whether using a direct, machine-to-machine connection, or a cloud negotiated connection, the new custom data channel allows developers to exploit the VNC SDK transport channel to extend the features of their products.

Monitor display management

Some devices and environments require multiple physical screens. For example, one screen may be presented to a customer and second screen may only be accessible by a service technician. This new feature allows a product developer to control exactly when and how screen images are presented to remote operators. This could mean that a service screen can only be viewed by a qualified service technician, and the customer screen viewed only by a customer service representative.

Enhancements such as these give product developers a richer toolkit for the integration of screen sharing into their products, delivering an even better ROI proposition and improved customer service. RealVNC is commented to our OEM partners and we have a number of exciting new features on our VNC SDK roadmap.
